The dark side of the rhino

This rhinoceros was grazing as we passed at a distance, sufficiently far off not to be a concern. Even though rhinos are one of nature’s naturally monochrome animals, I like to photograph them in colour, if only to show up the colours of their surroundings.

This image was shot at ISO 1000, f/5.6, 1/1000 on the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II with the 2x teleconverter. The focal length in the metadata is reported as 400mm – all the way out on the 2x teleconverter. Halving the shutter speed makes a significant difference to the image quality. I cropped this image down to 7482 wide for composition.
