Cactus Garden was a light art installation at the Chatswood Concourse from 24 April 2021 to 15 May 2021. It was part of Chatswood Culture Bites, Willoughby City Council’s cultural program. This is a study comparing the inflatable cacti at daytime vs night.
Cactus Garden features 10 unique inflatable Cacti ranging from 2 metres to 6 metres tall. Each featuring a unique custom design 20th Century Memphis style patterning. Each cactus seems to have a personality of its own, and together the characters seem to have invaded Chatswood Concourse to create a mini forest. They are the creation of Amigo & Amigo, a Sydney based artistic studio who have exhibited their work internationally in Asia, the Americas and Middle East. According to the artists:
“We want people to feel immersed in colour and play, finding joy in the discovery of these unusual plants.”

I visited on the second last day of the installation, around 4pm towards sunset when there weren’t too many people around, and at night around 8pm to capture the installation lit up at night. I found that the cacti looked very different at night vs day - proud and imposing vs cute and colourful.
