Making a meal of some ribs

Second time with the 2x teleconverter.

I chose to wait for some brighter light for my second session with the 2x teleconverter. I also updated my A1 with the new 1.3 firmware which promises eye-AF improvements and sundry less interesting changes.

This image was shot at ISO 3200, f/5.6 (wide open), 1/2000 on the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II with the 2x teleconverter. The focal length in the metadata is reported as 352mm (176mm on the lens), so not zoomed quite all the way. Not satisfied with getting that close, I then cropped the image to 2498x3552 pixels (from 5760x8640), so you are seeing how sharp the image can be. And yes, eye AF worked well, even with the ribs swinging across in front of his eyes from time to time.

I get the feeling I’ll be restricting my use of the 2x teleconverter to those times I’m shooting in bright light. I will be looking to get the 1.4x teleconverter, which only “costs” one stop, rather than two, and I think it will be my choice where I want reach in lesser light. Unfortunately, the 1.4x is still not available in Australia.
